![]() The Last Trial by Scott Turow – Book of the Year 2021Īgeing lawyer Sandy Stern takes on one last case when his old friend is accused of suppressing negative studies into the side-effects of a new cancer drug, and of the murder of patients who, the prosecution claims, had their lives shortened by taking it. A beautifully written fable which has layer upon layer of depth, dealing with the big questions of life, death, faith, and the place of medicine in all of these. Now they have been given the chance to return from the afterlife, but before they come alive at dawn the next day, they must have their wounds treated or they will die again. Each had been stabbed and left to die, which indeed they did. One night a village doctor is approached by three very strange patients, each with terrible wounds. Night Theatre by Vikram Paralkar – Book of the Year 2019 A wonderfully emotive journey that shows the human spirit at its very best. It’s also one of the most stirring and emotionally turbulent books I’ve ever read. ![]() This is a straightforward, factual telling of the story of Ernest Shackleton and his crew, and their failed 1914 bid to cross the Antarctic on foot from west to east. Endurance by Alfred Lansing – Book of the Year 2018 Another excellent entry in what for me is the best historical fiction series of all time. So when the book is stolen, Catherine calls on the loyalty of her old acquaintance, Matthew Shardlake, to find it and save her from becoming another of Henry’s victims. (I subsequently discovered via comments on Amazon US that I am apparently a racist and an apologist for slavery for daring to admire a bio of a Confederate General – who’d have thunk it?) Lamentation by CJ Sansom – Book of the Year 2015 In terms of the quality of the descriptive writing, the structure and skilful use of language, and the depth Gwynne brings to the characters of his main subject, his comrades and friends, this biography of Stonewall Jackson stands not just as an outstanding biography but as a very fine piece of literary writing. Rebel Yell by SC Gwynne – Book of the Year 2014
